A bill is on its way to Tennessee Governor Bill Lee’s desk that would prevent significant waivers to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program’s (SNAP) job requirement.

Senate Bill 2071 was substituted for a House companion bill, and the House passed it 91-0 without debate less than a week later.

The bill’s goal is to abolish the federal government’s widespread labour requirement waivers, which were made possible by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adults without children between the ages of 18 and 49 would have to work, train, or volunteer for 20 hours per week to qualify for benefits.
