Mariah Carey was born in Huntington, New York, on March 27, 1970. She descends from African Americans, Afro-Venezuelans, and the Irish. Her paternal grandfather changed his surname from Nunez to Carey upon arriving in New York. Her mother was an opera singer and voice coach in the past. Mariah’s parents divorced when she was three years old.
Always engaged in the arts and music in particular, while attending Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, Mariah began writing poetry and early songs. In 1987, she graduated from high school.
At Harborfields, Mariah made friends with Gavin Christopher and Ben Margulies, with whom she quickly began writing complete songs with lyrics and melody. After receiving their degrees and while residing in New York City, Mariah, Gavin, and Ben continued to collaborate on a full-length demo.
Eventually, the demo reached pop diva Brenda K. Starr. Brenda proceeded to distribute the sample while accompanying Mariah to other industry galas.
The demo tape was presented to Tommy Mottola, the head of Columbia Records, at one of these events. On his drive home, he listened to the cassette in the car. After hearing the first two songs by Mariah Carey, he was confident she would become a superstar.
It took Tommy two weeks to locate Mariah, but as soon as he did, he signed her to a record deal and gathered a team to plan her commercial launch. Tommy viewed Mariah as Columbia’s equivalent to Arista Records’ Whitney Houston.
On June 12, 1990, Mariah’s self-titled debut album was released. According to reports, Columbia spent $1 million promoting the album. Sales were initially slow, but the album would eventually be certified nine times platinum in the United States alone and sell more than 15 million copies worldwide. The album topped the Billboard charts and garnered her the Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Mariah’s 1991 album “Emotions” was also a huge success, but it was her 1993 record “Music Box” that propelled her career into the stratosphere. Music Box was on the Billboard chart for 128 weeks and finally sold an astounding 28 million copies worldwide. It is one of the most popular albums ever.
Her success was not at all fleeting. Her subsequent album, “Merry Christmas,” similarly sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. Her subsequent three albums would sell, respectively, 20 million, 10 million, and 8 million copies worldwide.
Return to Achievement
After being rejected by Virgin, Mariah signed a five-album, $24 million contract with Island Records. Her Island albums fared relatively well, with “The Emancipation of Mimi” selling 10 million copies worldwide in 2005 being her biggest hit.
Mariah recorded one album with Def Jam before signing with Epic Records in 2015, where she is currently signed.
In 2012, she earned $18 million performing on American Idol for one season.
In 2015, she signed a $30 million contract for a two-year residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. This contributed to her becoming one of the highest-earning women in music for the year, with total earnings of $27 million.
Mariah married music manager and producer Tommy Mottola in 1993. They split up in 1998. From 2008 to 2016, she was wed to the actor Nick Cannon. Together, they have two children, twin boys born in April 2011. She dated musician Luis Miguel from 1998 to 2001. In 2016, she was temporarily engaged to Australian businessman James Packer.
